By Bud Koenemund
Sadly, regarding matters romantic,
I have rarely lacked for stupidity;
While love turns my nature sycophantic,
No lady requites this avidity.
Madness arises as passion displays
Intensity in emotion – all or
Nothing; the only way I know – unswayed
By complications; my vow: to adore.
Though defective Reason cannot excuse
Patterns that seem an addiction to pain,
The mind suffers when a heart is abused;
Leaving senses suspect, and doubt ingrained.
For my
ignorance, time will grant no cure;
Nor patience, this agony, to
endure.

Weird
By Bud Koenemund
For C.
For C.
I’m weird? Pray tell, for writing little songs?
Articulating my feelings with verse?
While futile, would you call struggle wrong;
The offering of sentiment perverse?
But, I beg, remember, in days to come,
When thou art married, and bear two point three
Kids; suffering a man whose brain is numb;
Abiding ignorance, as love’s decreed
Through monosyllabic grunts; recall these
Scribblings fondly. Cherish those mem’ries
Awakened by words spun only to please
Your eye, with rhythm, and rhyme’s symmetry.
Though there is
strangeness in the proportions
Of my mind, it feeds beauty’s
expression.

Frankenstein
By Bud Koenemund
“I have love in me
the likes of which you can scarcely imagine
and rage the likes
of which you would not believe.”
– Mary Shelley
There is, too oft’, a war within my mind;
‘Twixt Good and Evil; the Dark Side and Light;
Intellect struggling to resist blind
Ignorance as shadows obscure the right.
Like poison unchecked, discontent infects
My soul, arousing inhumanity;
A monster existing disaffected
Toward empathy, risking insanity.
Why must I continue this conflict ‘gainst
Self, denied solace in another’s hand;
Some being like me to re-kindle sense,
Restore hope, and grant ease from life’s demands?
Solitude only nourishes
my rage,
And
bitterness grows as love dies away.

Pulse
By Bud Koenemund
For Orlando (12 June 2016)
For Orlando (12 June 2016)
Did you think violence would bring victory?
That enmity could force change in nature?
Make even one surrender liberty?
Gay, straight, transgender – we’re all God’s creatures!
Every bullet fired; each knife thrust;
Senseless pain inflicted; epithet hurled;
Nose fragmented, rib bruised, or head concussed
Enflames our hearts – the pulse filling this world.
Yes, your venom stole life, but love lives on;
Flourishing; shining through the ignorance
Of hate. And, that kiss which enraged shall bond
Us in celebration of difference.
Diversity strengthens
our unity,
We will rise together –
humanity!

What Would Jesus Say?
By Bud Koenemund
For the tired, the poor, the huddled masses.
What would Jesus say if he knew those with
Abundance refuse souls truly in need?
When their ignorance serves to feed a myth
Rather than a mouth, would He call that greed?
Should His pride unfurl when hatred is hurled
At women and children by those who claim
To believe in One who made the whole World;
Or, will His judgment serve to kindle shame?
He commands, “Suffer the little children
To come unto me.” Yet, blessed with plenty,
Many fail His word, condemning millions
Of innocents to life in poverty.
It is human weakness which makes gold’s worth
Seem higher than our brothers on this Earth.
For the tired, the poor, the huddled masses.
What would Jesus say if he knew those with
Abundance refuse souls truly in need?
When their ignorance serves to feed a myth
Rather than a mouth, would He call that greed?
Should His pride unfurl when hatred is hurled
