Blue Eyes Blue

By Bud Koenemund

For K.

I see the sadness hidden in your eyes;
A pain you try to bury, which lurks still;
Nearer the surface than you know; disguised,
Yet visible; lingering ‘gainst thy will.
Heartbreak and loneliness are compounding
Sorrows; breeding doubt; confusing every
Setback with tragedy; poisoning
The soul. But, trust time will dull memory,
Allowing you to heal. Made whole once more;
Emerging stronger; by love enfolded;
The gleam renewed in those sapphire orbs –
Shining like sunlight thawing Winter’s cold.
   My intent is these verses bring delight;
   A smile, if brief, to draw day from night.

More Fool Than Poet

By Bud Koenemund

For Lindsay

If poetry could amend my visage;
Its rhythm melt away a dozen years,
Allowing prose or rhyme power to bridge
The chasm twixt concupiscence and fear,
I would dedicate my verses for thee;
Endeavouring ever to coax your smile
With little songs proclaiming its beauty –
Confessions composed in a heart beguiled.
But, cursed by time, what words can I bestow
That might defy fortune and win thy kiss?
Lady; you make me more fool than poet;
Courting doom as age mocks my search for bliss.
   Oh, Muse; goddess of creativity;
   Thy grace shall achieve immortality.

Memories of You Always Begin with a Smile

By Bud Koenemund

For "Her."

Memories of you always begin
With a smile; thoughts springing forth to curve
My lips: your laugh; whispers; treason kindled
In the dark; brown eyes; that Clapton song still serves.
For a moment – beautiful, though fleeting –
I see your face, and recall the joy of
First sight; offering my heart, not heeding
The warnings given – a fool blind in love.
Sadly, this pleasure cannot live without
Anguish, and gossamer visions spoil
As what might have been, but never was, routs
These daydreams, leaving affection soiled.
   Remembrance endures, the more torment mine,
   For time has yet to purge you from my mind.
