By Bud Koenemund
You fooled me into believing I could
Be worthy of love; a soul misled to
Think – despite previous defeats – this would
Work; that affection was given one who
Might finally requite the warmth received;
Mirroring my effort and devotion.
But, once more, this heart’s desire deceived
A mind vulnerable; lacking notions
Of treason; blind to prevarication.
Though intellect provided ample warning,
Enchantment deafened sense, and illusion
Grew quickly, obscuring misgivings.
Reality killed my
season of joy,
And lies left behind a spirit
destroyed.

Memories of You Always Begin with a Smile
By Bud Koenemund
For "Her."
For "Her."
Memories of you always begin
With a smile; thoughts springing forth to curve
My lips: your laugh; whispers; treason kindled
In the dark; brown eyes; that Clapton song still serves.
For a moment – beautiful, though fleeting –
I see your face, and recall the joy of
First sight; offering my heart, not heeding
The warnings given – a fool blind in love.
Sadly, this pleasure cannot live without
Anguish, and gossamer visions spoil
As what might have been, but never was, routs
These daydreams, leaving affection soiled.
Remembrance
endures, the more torment mine,
For time has yet to purge you
from my mind.

No Muse is Good Muse
By Bud Koenemund
For "Her."
For "Her."
Passion kindled so quickly, but it seems
The feelings were completely one-sided.
Despite rhythm and rhyme, you crushed my dreams
‘Gainst the rocks reality provided.
Desire blinded me, and I confused
You for the bringer of inspiration;
A goddess to every writer; a muse
Who grants by grace the gift of creation.
The “you” I loved was only illusion –
An ideal built upon self-deception.
And I, fooled by the equivocation,
Believed you would requite my affection.
I know now you
weren’t worth my devotion;
Sadly, this
awareness was too hard won.30 May 2014
You Don't Love Me, But You Won't Let Me Go
By Bud Koenemund
For "Her."
Fearing you've returned to hurt me again,
I crumble once more – left wondering what
I've done to deserve the unending pain
You inflict: the indifference which cuts
Through body and soul, infecting my mind
With doubt, and an anger that taints the heart –
Poisoning affection; leaving me blind
To delight, e'en as I seek a new start.
You don't love me, but you won't let me go.
And I, unable to resist, still trust
An illusion, just an idiot's hope,
Someday we'll rebuild passion from the dust.
Dark Lady, I beg, understand my plea:
Claim my hand…or forever set me free.
For "Her."
Fearing you've returned to hurt me again,

Thesaurize
By Bud Koenemund
Thesaurize: (verb)
To think or believe a word means, or is synonymous with, something it does not
or is not. Often used when referring to another person in a derogatory manner.
You were too fucking stupid to see you were
getting what you want.
I was falling in love with you. – "Her."
I once believed love meant everything;
A yearning beyond real definition;
Passion built on devotion; cherishing
Another soul; becoming a bastion
'Gainst each defeat, and partner in the climb
Toward bliss. I would give all I am to feel
The momentary touch of such sublime
Emotion, offered with joy unconcealed.
But, you have schooled me in affection's new
Meaning: Indifference toward one who adores;
Evasion; leading sanity askew
When you speak of love, while in deed abhor.
'Tis certain
you're right; I'm a man 'twas blind;
In consequence, my heart betrayed my mind.

Crazy Again
Here's to another 15 years.
– "Her"
Fifteen years. Fuck me sideways! Fifteen years?!
A lifetime passed; so many chances lost.
When lies and doubt feed on the darkest fears
Of a heart, eyes are blind, and trust the cost.
There are no more words in this broken soul;
No rhymes to pen in hope of winning love.
In truth, affection is dead. It's bell tolled
Silently; muted within a cloud of
Dashed dreams disguised as an epiphany.
Madness has once more crept into my brain,
Exposing my yearnings as fantasies –
And granting freedom to rage unrestrained.
Why must love cause such passion, both when here
And gone; destroying all that I hold dear?

The Heart as Icarus
For Amy Lynn Watkins
The heart as Icarus soars toward the sun
Of our desires. But, blind to hazard,
Love so often tumbles from light to dun;
Leaving all – mind, body, and soul – battered.
Dicing 'gainst the Gods, we strive to escape
This fate; yearning for flight beyond our dreams.
Sadly, we find that we are poor in shape –
Requiring wings in such airy streams.
Words stand impotent – overwhelmed by clouds
Of loss – never healing our wounded pride.
Yet, even through the darkness of this shroud
Strong hearts will rise to seek a love enskied.
Though now it seems tears cannot be restrained,
'Tis certain, time will melt away our pain.

Damn'd Cupid has Forever Cursed Me
For "Her."
Damn’d Cupid has forever cursed me
To dote on imperfection’s perfection;
With my eye to admire her beauty,
While my heart bleeds, battered by rejection;
The Archer’s arrow easily pierced my breast,
Though she, to love’s wound, was proof’d it seems.
Now visions of joy have been smashed to dust,
And the failures suffered infect my dreams;
Am I thus condemned to crawl in darkness,
The blind victim in this malicious hoax;
Destined to be consumed by emptiness,
And forever doomed to pursue her ghost?
Oh, impious devil, pity my plight;
Release my heart that I may turn to light.
Damn’d Cupid has forever cursed me
To dote on imperfection’s perfection;
With my eye to admire her beauty,
While my heart bleeds, battered by rejection;
The Archer’s arrow easily pierced my breast,
