Grief

By Bud Koenemund

Grief will never refuse a chance to sneak
Up on me – quickening darkness; breeding
Sorrow; tearing apart defenses weak;
Leaving sanity broken and bleeding.
It taints the verses of a thousand songs;
Barely remembered poems can spark life;
Trapping my mind amidst numberless wrong
Turns – where memory waits with whetted knife.
This monster aims not to kill, but open
Wounds thought healed by time; renewing my pain.
Misery, faded – almost forgotten –
Returns, overwhelming what peace I’ve gained.
   Someday, one hopes, suffering may convert;
   For now, there are no days it doesn’t hurt.

Love: 1998 - 2016 (Part IV: Language Lesson)

By Bud Koenemund

For "Her."

‘Twas a muse who rendered my words useless;
Those I believed most sacred impotent
‘Fore her indifference, and each success
Tainted by reality: a heart rent;
Left without the one thing it desires;
Unable to woo, and incapable
Of forgetting; left burning in fires
Stoked by my own hand – inescapable
Torment. The pen, they say, wields more power
Than a sword, but passionate language pales
Compared to self-doubt, and fortune lours
O’er my naiveté as love lies veiled.
   The scars of this lesson may never heal;
   Wounds remaining forever uncongealed.

No Good Deed

By Bud Koenemund

For T.

I never kept my attraction secret,
Rather, regard was too often laid bare.
Yet, I gave comfort, asking no credit,
And thy judgment censured a soul who cared.
Your rebuke, undeserv’d, cut deeply –
A jagged edge drawn, and kindness repaid
With crimson rivers – the wounds still seeping
As you reappeared, once more seeking aid.
How should I answer thee? Open my heart
To thy pleas despite these scars I carry;
When what remains is but the worser part
Of me, and better nature lies buried?
   Charity strives ‘gainst a spirit vanquished;
   For no good deed, they say, goes unpunished.

Deceit and Pity

By Bud Koenemund

For "Her."

Once upon a time, I would have given
My last breath to hear you whisper my name
In love; the balm healing a soul riven;
Reciprocation of passion untamed.
But, your deceit ruined affection, and
To thy mem’ry I am no longer bound.
Your occasional communiqués can
Only be efforts to re-open wounds –
And that Siren song is now powerless.
Although attempts to tear at sanity
Persist, their effect is rendered harmless;
Inspiring nothing more than pity.
   Henceforth, I’ll never take thy word as truth,
   For ‘gainst your deceptions my heart is proofed.

Ninth Step

For "Her."

Do not presume your ninth step is my first
Toward granting absolution. In truth, your
Effort is wasted on a man well-versed
In scorn; possessed of a heart love abjures.
Struggling to amend rips open old wounds
Festered in a decade of bitterness;
Revealing a soul where malice abounds.
Of sin I stand not guiltless, but confess:
‘Tis not my place nor power to excuse
Others, while I cannot forgive myself.
No, I am a fool whose mind is abused
By allowing hate to feed on itself.
Though pardon’s a grace that sets conscience free,
You’ll have to go on healing without me.
