Dragon's Breath

By Bud Koenemund

For Lindsay

I’m thinking of you wearing that turquoise
Sundress; incandescent in the twilight.
Longing sparks a fire; spirits rejoice;
Embracing until o’ertaken by night.
Shadows disguise; clothes bunch ‘round knees and waists;
Mouths meet hungrily, then whispers implore;
Inhibitions are abandoned to haste;
Flames intensify as fingers explore.
Lust envelopes us in the Dragon’s breath;
Two bodies become one, while heat radiates
From flesh demanding a little death:
That paradise where desire’s sated.
   We are consumed when our passion explodes;
   Then reborn to worlds of pleasures untold.

Madness and Muse

By Bud Koenemund

For "Her."

"A thing of beauty is a joy forever." - John Keats

I hold your memory against my will;
Sentiment which imperils sanity
When every thought and dream reminds me still
Of the fool who gave devotion blindly.
But, this world won’t stop for a broken heart.
Indifferent to pain, both moon and sun
Rise, shine, then retire without regard;
Beg heaven for pity, you’ll receive none.
These things I desire can never be
Real. Love, fidelity lasting past death –
Blessed by madness and muse – is fantasy;
Affection shrouded in the dragon’s breath.
   Misery, it seems, lives joy’s companion;
   Torment entwined with beauty and passion.

Indomitable

By Bud Koenemund

For Shaindel Beers

I wish to protect thee – in my fashion.
Drop everything, rush there, and shield you
From the world; from doubt; from yourself; dragons
Immortal; fears forever pursuing.
Training dictates action, see? My father;
Gary Cooper; John Wayne; the Infantry;
Always taught to defend the weak – rather
Smothering with attempts at chivalry.
‘Tis ever man’s hubris, I’ve learned: seeking
To support a survivor; these labors
Merely re-arranging deck chairs, sinking
Slowly into comments on the décor
   While you heal; for thou art no damsel
   In distress, but a heart indomitable.

The Mad Sonneteer Muses Club

By Bud Koenemund

For my (many?) Muses

In truth, it’s a club rather exclusive –
Relative to, you might say, Madison
Square Garden; nigh a score of elusive
Muses. Plus a mad sonneteer undone
By words – admittedly a clumsy tool –
For he frights the hearts he would admire.
‘Tis an easy task: arousing a fool,
Immolating his soul upon the pyre
Of love, then leaving him to beg favor
While tilting vainly at the dragon lust.
Would not one reach out; becoming savior
To a poet, thus mending broken trust?
   Lady, forgive this proliferation;
   I swear, it could ne’er dilute affection.

Lust and Love are Alike Attired

By Bud Koenemund

Desire burns hot, torturing my mind
With visions of two becoming one flesh;
Fantasies of your skin pressed against mine,
And endearments lost as we fight for breath.
Surrender to me, and our bodies will
Melt together in the dragon’s fire;
Embracing sin, and ecstasy fulfilled,
As toward the little death we aspire.
Lady, please pardon my vulgarity,
For I lack the pretty prose required
To spark passion. Though ‘tis absurdity,
So oft’ lust and love are alike attired.
   I seek not by words to mislead your heart,
   Offering only truth disguised as art.

Paradise or the Abyss

By Bud Koenemund

For TK

Enchantment from first sight I do admit;
Physical separation cannot quell,
Nor the disparity of years omit,
This truth which has too long in shadows dwelled.
Yearning to touch you compels – fingertips
Caressing skin warmed by dragon’s fire –
My mouth constantly hungers for your lips;
Though, lust is not the limit of desire.
I would, Lady, endeavour to become
The poet held highest in thy esteem;
For you, muse, who so oft’ has left me dumb,
Might mend my heart, and a lost soul redeem.
   I beg, let not impediments divide,
   And embrace these lyrics birthed in your eyes.

Deadly Sin

Am I not a mortal, born into sin;
An imperfect man, destined to transgress?
Shall I stand condemned for the beast within;
Tendering prayers entreating forgiveness?
No! I'll abandon virtue for thy kiss,
The warmth of your skin on my fingertips,
And whispers shrouded in the Dragon's mist –
Where carnal urges rise and reason slips.
Each time I see you, I long to confess
This fault; to admit the concupiscence
Burning through my body. Though, what blessing
Would that bring, when lust o'erwhelms innocence?
   Your touch alone can sate this desire,
   And damn my soul to the eternal fire.

I'll Not Promise Things I Can't Deliver

For "Her."

I’ll not promise things I can’t deliver,
Strands of pearls, or Everest mounts of gold.
In truth you will more likely discover,
I can give no more than my hand to hold;
I won’t promise you some fool’s paradise,
A shining love story perfectly told.
But I’ll be your bruis’d and battered knight,
Fighting life’s dragons, ever brave and bold.
I can’t promise you material wealth,
Though I’ll be, through summer, and winter cold,
A friend, a lover, in sickness and health,
Staying with you when you’re wrinkled and old;
My precious true love, worth riches untold,
I give thee freely from my heart and soul.
